High Protein Soup Recipes

Most soup is a starter. It is mostly broth, it runs 5 to 10g of protein per bowl, and an hour later you are hungry again. The recipes here are built the other way around: each one carries 21 to 39g of protein per serving and enough fiber or fat to hold you until the next meal, so a single bowl is lunch or dinner rather than the thing you eat before dinner.

The protein in a soup comes almost entirely from what you simmer into it, not from the liquid. That means the lever is always the same: a lean animal protein, a legume, or both. Shredded chicken breast, lean ground beef, chicken sausage, black beans, cannellini beans, and lentils do the work across these six recipes. Beans and lentils pull double duty because they also thicken the broth as they break down, which is how several of these soups reach a stew-like body without any cream, roux, or cornstarch.

Every recipe is a single pot, finishes in 30 to 40 minutes, and is written to scale up and reheat well. A pot of the chicken soup or the beef and vegetable soup is realistically four to five lunches, and the flavor on the bean-based soups actually improves after a day in the fridge as the spices settle. Where a soup freezes well, the recipe says so and notes which components to add fresh on reheating, usually the leafy greens, which turn to mush after a freeze and thaw.

Below, the six soups ranked by protein per serving, then the recipe cards, then answers to the questions that come up most: which soup is highest in protein, how to add protein to a soup you already make, and what a genuinely high fiber high protein soup looks like.

High protein soup, answered

What soup is highest in protein?

Soups built on a lean animal protein plus beans rank highest. Here the high protein chicken soup leads at about 39g per serving from shredded chicken breast and cannellini beans, then chicken tortilla soup at 38g and beef and vegetable soup at 35g. A broth-only soup usually has 5g or less, so the protein comes almost entirely from what is simmered into it.

How do you add protein to soup?

The effective additions are shredded cooked chicken or turkey, canned beans or lentils, a spoonful of plain Greek yogurt stirred in off the heat, or a scoop of unflavored collagen. Beans and lentils also thicken the broth. Adding 1.5 cups of beans and 2 cups of shredded chicken to a standard pot of vegetable soup takes a 6g serving to roughly 30g.

What is a good high fiber high protein soup?

The black bean soup on this page hits both: about 21g of protein and 16g of fiber per serving from black beans and red lentils, finished with a nonfat Greek yogurt swirl. Blending half the pot keeps the fiber in the bowl and thickens the soup without cream.

Can soup be a high protein meal on its own?

Yes, if it carries at least 25 to 30g of protein plus some fiber or fat to stay filling. Every recipe here is built to that standard, so a single bowl works as lunch or dinner rather than a first course.

Are canned beans or dried beans better for protein soup?

The protein is nearly identical. Canned beans are faster and go straight in; dried beans are cheaper per serving but must be fully cooked before meeting an acidic broth, since acid stops undercooked beans from softening. Use about 1.5 cups cooked to replace one 15 oz can.
